Creative Assembly Graduate Art Contest

So just over a week ago I saw on the Polycount forum that Creative Assembly was hosting a Graduate Art Contest.

Being a massive fan of the Total War series I just had to enter, Its been a fun week the whole creation process was a lot smoother than normal the pressure was on but I refused to let it beat me. I’m very happy with the end result but I wish I had seen the comp sooner as I would of liked to of made the design abit more elaborate than I ended up with. Below are the final renders and a 3D viewer from sketchfab I hope this works not tried using it before.

I hope you like it I had a great time and earned even more valuable experience completing this project I intend to animate the catapult and possibly create some more siege machines in the near future.

Heres a link to the Sketchfab page, Blogger wont let me embed the viewer :(

Guild Wars 2 Inspiring is a understatement!

The title says it all really I recently started playing Guild Wars 2 and I have to say the art department have done a fantastic job on this one. It has really inspired me to want to push myself that little bit more to one day work in the industry and hopefully produce work of a similar standard.

I have decided to give the Train2Game coursework a short break at the moment and focus on building a small but very detailed scene based on the general time period and feel that has been used in Guild Wars 2.

I shall be doing a series of blog posts explaining my development pipeline to give you all a good understanding of the sort of work I do and how I approach different problems as they arise (as they always do) I plan to do a very primitive concept of the scene and then slowly build up the detail until I have a good high poly model then I will bake down all the appropriate information onto a lower polygon model.

I'm really excited about this project and look forward to showing you my progress as it unfolds thanks again for reading.

First post of 2013!

Let me start by saying Happy New Year! 2012 was very eventful and great fun. I 2013 I intend to really put the hammer down and focus on my goals. I'm really excited about what the future may hold. Train2Game has been a great experience so far and I have met some very talented individuals further increasing my want to get into the industry as a full blown environment artist.

Its not been all smooth sailing however. Sadly production on Stool Pigeon has come to a halt. Due to communication issues between the team and general life getting in the way for all of us. There is a version of the game that can be downloaded onto any windows 8 device. However this is the build we used as our final game for the World Record attempt. Production will eventually continue once all the members of the team are available and working on the project again.

On a more positive note I have made allot of progress on my course and have managed to create my first character model. However I'm unable to post images outside of the Train2Game forums because students are not allowed to publish there coursework so at the moment these images have to stay with myself which is a shame because I'm really proud of what I have achieved.

I have a few ideas for some small mini projects that I will be posting as soon as I have decided which one to complete.

Thanks for taking your time to read my blog more posts to come soon

Update on progress with Stool Pigeon

As promised I said a while back that I would show progress with regards to Stool Pigeon, I have spent a lot of time recently creating graphics for the menus and I have just finished designing rough ideas the new direction the studio has decided to take following the success of September’s game jam.

At the moment I can't go into too much detail as the game is still under development and as a game designer your ideas and projects are never safe until you release it. However I have decided that a few peeks behind the curtain never hurt anyone below is a few ideas I've had with regards to the first levels background. I thought it would be a good idea to try three different times of day when creating these screens. I wanted to keep the cartoon style feel that we have created the other screens and assets when I create these images. For the Night and Dusk images I’m thinking maybe adding some lights to the tops of some of the skyline buildings may help to make the image pop a little more.

Night Background
These images are not final they are simply used to show my idea once I get the all clear from the rest of the team I intend to go back over these images and polish them up adding further detail to the scene and maybe think about animating the clouds at a later date.

As always thanks for supporting my blog and I look forward to showing you further images closer to the release date.

Pencil to paper!

As I have mentioned in the past I have always considered myself lacking in ability when it comes to my drawing skills however this is a skill that I have been working round the clock for the last few weeks and I finally feel comfortable showing the world my progress below are two images that I have created without the use of a computer which I’m very happy about.

Wrinkles in fabric study

This is my first attempt at drawing a shirt in the history of my life and I know the proportions are out the left side of the image is much better than the right but still I’m very happy with the final result and it has given me more confidence to learn new things and develop my drawing skills.

Manga style eye study

Here is my attempt at manga art focusing just on eyes and I am also quite happy with the overall result I feel that there is still a very long way to go but as a beginner I feel quite confident that with a lot of hard work I might one day be able to consider myself a full blown 2D and 3D artist that’s my goal and I fully intend of making it one day! Wish me luck!

Once I have a bigger portfolio of hand drawn images I also intend on creating a new page on this site solely to showcase my drawings so please stay tuned and thank you for your continued support.
